Your Child’s ‘Movement Profile’: What Bikes, Ball Games and Play Can Reveal

Did you know, the way your child rides a bike, catches a ball or moves through a busy playground may reveal more than their sporting abilities?


That’s because these activities rely on balance, coordination, eye tracking, body awareness, attention and sensory processing. When one or more of these skills is difficult, a child may avoid certain activities, become frustrated or appear less coordinated than their peers.


A child’s movement profile cannot diagnose ADHD, dyspraxia or another neurodevelopmental condition. However, it can help you identify patterns that may be affecting their learning, emotional regulation and confidence.

What Is a Child’s Movement Profile?


A movement profile is the pattern of strengths and difficulties shown in the way a child uses their body.


It may include how they:


  • maintain their balance

  • coordinate both sides of the body

  • follow moving objects with their eyes

  • plan a sequence of movements

  • judge distance, direction and speed

  • respond to noise, touch and motion

  • and manage physical activities in busy environments


You might notice that your child is confident in one situation but struggles in another.


For example, they may enjoy running but avoid cycling. They may climb confidently but find catching a ball extremely difficult. They might move well at home but lose coordination in a noisy playground. The aim is not to compare children: it is to notice repeated patterns

What Can Riding a Bike Reveal?


Riding a bike requires several developmental systems to work together.


A child must pedal, steer, balance, look ahead and respond to their surroundings at the same time. This places demands on bilateral coordination, visual attention, motor planning and the vestibular system, which supports balance and spatial awareness.


A child who finds cycling difficult may:


  • rely on stabilisers for longer than expected;

  • look down at the pedals instead of ahead;

  • struggle with starting or stopping;

  • become tense when turning;

  • lose balance when distracted;

  • or avoid bikes and scooters completely.


One difficulty with bike riding does not necessarily indicate a developmental concern. Some children simply need more time or practice.


However, cycling difficulties may be worth exploring when they occur alongside frequent falls, poor balance, coordination difficulties or avoidance of climbing equipment.


The wider pattern of movement is usually more useful than one isolated activity.


Ball Games Require More Than Hand-Eye Coordination


Catching a ball may appear simple, but it involves several processes happening very quickly.


A child must visually track the ball, predict where it will travel, position their body and organise their hands in time to catch it.


A child with eye tracking difficulties or reduced motor coordination may understand exactly what they need to do but still struggle to carry it out.


You may notice that your child:


  • turns their whole head to follow the ball;

  • closes their hands too early or too late;

  • moves away when the ball approaches;

  • finds it difficult to judge speed;

  • or does not react until the ball is very close.


These responses can sometimes be mistaken for inattention.

In reality, the child may be concentrating hard but struggling to process the visual and physical demands of the activity.


At Brain Development UK, we encourage parents to look beyond the immediate behaviour. Avoiding a ball game is not always a lack of interest. Inconsistent performance is not always a lack of effort.


Busy Play Can Highlight Sensory Processing Difficulties


Playgrounds, soft-play centres and team games can place significant demands on a child’s sensory processing skills.


There may be loud voices, fast movement, physical contact, changing rules and children travelling in different directions.


The child must filter all this information while maintaining balance, controlling their body and deciding how to respond.


For some children, busy play can lead to sensory overload or emotional dysregulation.

They may run constantly without joining a game, become overly physical, withdraw from other children or become distressed when it is time to leave.


Instead of asking only, “Why is my child behaving like this?”, it may be more helpful to ask:


What is this environment asking my child’s brain and body to manage?


A busy playground may reveal movement or sensory difficulties that are less visible during calm, one-to-one activities.


How Are Movement and Attention Connected?


Movement skills and classroom learning are not separate.


Postural stability helps a child remain comfortable at a desk. Eye tracking supports reading and copying from the board. Bilateral coordination is needed for handwriting, cutting, dressing and organising school materials.


When a child uses significant effort simply to control their posture or movements, they may have less capacity available for listening, remembering instructions and maintaining attention.

This does not mean that movement exercises cure ADHD or replace medical, educational or therapeutic support.


It means that developmental foundations may form one part of a wider understanding of the child.

Signs Parents Can Observe at Home


Parents do not need specialist equipment to begin noticing the patterns we’ve been exploring.


Consider whether your child:


  • avoids bikes, scooters or climbing frames;

  • frequently bumps into objects or people;

  • becomes frustrated during ball games;

  • tires quickly during physical activities;

  • struggles more in noisy environments;

  • finds it difficult to listen and move at the same time;

  • or performs a skill well one day but not the next.


Try keeping brief notes over several weeks.


Record what the activity was, where it happened and how your child responded. Notice whether tiredness, noise, hunger or unfamiliar surroundings affected their performance.

This can help reveal links between movement, attention, sensory processing and self-regulation.
